Yamashiro Kenshin: A Giant Living with KUMUI
Yamashiro Kensin (1937–2023) stands as a vital figure in postwar Okinawan art and is equally recognized for pioneering clay based creative education in special needs schools.
His collaborative work with children—rooted in tactile engagement and embodied experience—came to be regarded as an innovative practice that laid the groundwork for Okinawa’s Art Brut movement. Later, as a professor at the Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts, he nurtured younger generations while exploring Okinawan memory and bodily sensibility through familiar materials such as sand and paper.
This exhibition presents a comprehensive view of his achievements in education, artistic practice, and spiritual inquiry, inviting a renewed consideration of his place within the history of postwar Okinawan art.
