11 "Tomb" YAMAKAWA Kiyoshi

#11

  • Title:Tomb

  • Artist:YAMAKAWA Kiyoshi

Rows of white stone buildings stand under the bright sky. This painting depicts a landscape of traditional Okinawan tombs.

Exposed to wind and rain over many years, the walls have cracked, and patches of grass now grow over them.

Under the clear blue sky, the strong sunlight makes the white stone walls, and the vivid green grass stand out sharply.

The contrast of light and shadow captures the intense brightness of Okinawa’s sun.

This work was painted by Yamakawa Kiyoshi, an artist from Osaka, who visited Okinawa in 1939.

At that time, many artists who came to Okinawa painted scenes of these distinctive tombs. The sight, so different from anything seen on the Japanese mainland, must have deeply stirred their curiosity and imagination.
