08 "Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove" YAMADA Shinzan

#08

  • Title:Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove

  • Artist:YAMADA Shinzan

The “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove” were real scholars and poets who lived in China around the 3rd century.

It is said that they withdrew from politics and worldly concerns, gathering in a bamboo grove to share wine, enjoy music, and exchange ideas.

Their way of life came to represent an ideal of living freely and purely, and their image has been depicted many times in both Chinese and Japanese art.

This folding screen was painted by Yamada Shinzan, one of Okinawa’s leading artists.

In the scene, some men open a hanging scroll and discuss it, others relax on rocks, and some laugh and talk together. Each person is shown spending time in his own way.

The soft, gentle colors convey the clear air of the bamboo grove and the calm, peaceful flow of time.
