04 "Market in Itoman" YOSHIDA Hiroshi

#04

  • Title:Market in Itoman

  • Artist:YOSHIDA Hiroshi

Earthenware pots and large jars in shades of reddish brown are lined up close together. The thick, rough brushstrokes give a strong sense of the pottery’s texture and weight.

Around them, people are shown choosing goods or walking by, bringing the lively atmosphere of a bustling market to life.

The contrast between bright light and deep shadow also conveys the strong sunlight characteristic of Okinawa.

Yoshida Hiroshi was an active artist from the Meiji to the Showa period. He traveled widely throughout Japan, as well as across Asia, Europe, and the United States, creating many landscapes that captured the unique light and feeling of each place. He visited Okinawa in 1912.

This painting vividly expresses both the brilliant Okinawan sunlight and the energetic spirit of the market at that time.
