A Gamecock stands on one leg, staring straight ahead with sharp eyes. Its strong legs and proud posture convey the spirit of a brave warrior.
When you look more closely, you can see that each feather is drawn with great care—the red feathers on the neck, the black feathers on the chest and back, and the glossy tail feathers. The differences in color and texture are beautifully expressed.
The plain background helps to emphasize the powerful presence of the bird itself.
The artist, Yoshimura Chogi, was born in Shuri in 1866, at the end of the Ryukyu Kingdom. He was a man of many talents—skilled in both calligraphy and painting, also known as a master of karate.
The dignified strength of this Gamecock reflects the spirit of Chogi himself, who excelled in both the arts and martial disciplines.
