Since the 1990s, the endeavors of emerging artists have become more prominent and their bases of activity have expanded.

In addition to museums and galleries, there are an increasing number of centers and hubs of artistic activity that are being operated and managed by the artists themselves. Events and exhibitions are being held not only within Okinawa Prefecture but also outside of the prefecture and abroad.

The nature of the exhibitions has also become more diversified. Art festivals and art projects have popped up in many regions, and artists are presenting works that express “Okinawa” in a variety of locations through their participation in these projects.
