A gray line stretches from the foreground towards the horizon. Murky, dark blue surrounds it. The white rectangles and orange lines seen in the upper portion of the artwork are most likely depictions of oil storage tanks on Henza Island.
The Mid-Sea Road (Kaichū Dōro) is now a well-known tourist attraction in Okinawa. It is said that before this road was built, islanders would use boats at high tide and trucks acquired from the U.S. military at low tide as their means of transportation out to the island.
This work was created in 1976, shortly after Okinawa’s reversion to Japan. Urban development was taking place throughout the prefecture at this time, gradually transforming Okinawa into a modern landscape.
For Kikumura, the Mid-Sea Road may have been a place that evoked feelings of unease and apprehension about the loss of Okinawa’s original landscape.
