Illuminated by the moonlight, a sign that reads “OFF LIMITS” stands out in sharp relief against the dark background. Barbed wire is entwined around the base of the sign, and a torn red cloth is snagged on one of its edges.
Around the sign are depictions of a woman lying naked, a pair of soldier's shoes, and a pack of cigarettes. A spectral figure can also be seen floating in the air.
“Off Limits” was an order issued by the U.S. military to prohibit U.S. military personnel from visiting certain civilian areas for security and health reasons, with the implication of keeping military personnel away from harm or trouble.
However, there have a numerous incidents and accidents caused by U.S. military personnel have frequently harmed Okinawans. Women in particular have been victimized.
This work seems to highlight the absurdity of “Off Limits” and call into question what it is truly meant to protect.
