A large flame is blowing in the wind. The figure holding the flame is quite stylized with an extremely small head and long, extended neck. Surrounding the figure are the Japanese, American, and Greek national flags, as well as an airplane.

This work was created in 1964 – the year the Tokyo Olympics were held. The Olympic Torch arrived in Okinawa, which was under U.S. rule at that time, and a relay was held to take the torch around the country.

At that time, displaying the Japanese flag was severely restricted in Okinawa. However, when the torch relay was held, Japanese flags were flown in various places, and people cheered on the relay runners by waving Japanese flags.

In Oshiro’s characteristically refined style, this work depicts the moment when the Olympic torch arrived at Naha Airport and the Japanese flag was boldly raised.
