Dilapidated tanks lie in the middle of a grassy green field. The bodies of the tanks are mostly discolored with rust, and grass is growing out through the parts that have fallen to the ground. The appearance of the tanks indicates that they have been abandoned there for a long time.
This work was painted in 1950 and is said to depict Nishihara in the central part of the main island of Okinawa — one of the fiercest battlefields in WWII.
There is a somber feeling lingering in this landscape, still evoking sadness even five years after the war’s end.
The artist of this work, Omine Seikwan , was an art teacher before the war. His students were mobilized in the war effort as part of the Himeyuri Student Corps and many of them lost their lives. After this, he vowed to never teach again.
This work seems to be expressing Omine’s profound feelings of loss, emptiness, and hopelessness.
