The title of this artwork is “Christmas Card.” When you look at this artwork, you might be confused at first and wonder why it was given this title. This artwork depicts Okinawan scenery, plants, and buildings and appears to have nothing specifically to do with Christmas.
Directly after the end of WWII, the American Military government ordered the Okinawan Civilian Administration to mass produce Christmas cards that depicted Okinawan scenery. The aim was to earn foreign currency through the sales of these Christmas cards to US military personnel.
The majority of the artists who produced these works were art technicians employed at the time by the Okinawan Civilian Administration.
