During the war, many residents of Okinawa evacuated to mainland Japan. Even after the war ended, Okinawa was still under U.S. military governance, and for a period of time it was impossible for residents to return to Okinawa from mainland Japan.
On August 17, 1946, the first repatriation ship from mainland Japan arrived in Okinawa. It arrived at Kubasaki Port in Nakagusuku Village.
One of Okinawa’s leading post-war painters, Adaniya Masayoshi, returned to Okinawa on another repatriation ship in August of the same year. Years later, Adaniya recounted his memory of seeing the white lines that the military roads made along the western coast from his ship.
