A person riding a bicycle is advancing along a road upon which long shadows have been cast by utility poles. Behind the bicyclist are two women who seem to be standing and talking. Two more women have also been depicted walking and talking on the road ahead of the bicyclist.

The leisurely manner of the figures combined with the soft colors of the evening evoke the feeling of a quiet and peaceful everyday life.

Yagi Seiko was born in Tokyo in 1924 and grew up in Okinawa. He learned how to paint from Oshiro Koya, one of Okinawa’s leading post-war painters. Yagi became active in the Okinawan art scene, winning prizes at the OkiTen art exhibitions. In 1951, he moved to Argentina at the request of his older brother, and then went on to study painting in France for ten years.

This work was painted the year after he arrived in Argentina. It shows his sincere dedication to painting, even as he was struggling to establish a new life in an unfamiliar place.
