The October 10th Air Raid (“Ten Ten Air Raid”) of 1944 and the Battle of Okinawa in 1945 caused enormous damage and suffering.
Works of art were no exception to this devastation. Many of the art works created before the war were destroyed by fire during the course of the conflict.
However, works of art that had been stored outside of Okinawa Prefecture or overseas escaped the damage of war and can still be viewed today.
In some cases, it may also be possible to learn about lost works of art through printed materials such as art books or the catalogs of previous exhibitions.
There could still be other surviving works of art out there somewhere. Therefore, the search continues.
