"The war stole everything from Okinawa. It even erased our elegant customs. That's why this is the only thing that I've painted since the end of the war — because I want to preserve the customs and lifestyle of the Okinawan past," seid painter GUSHIKEN Seiji.
Utilizing a pale pigmented palette, Gushiken's paintings express feelings of nostalgia and seek to depict the peaceful life of the Okinawan people.
We invite you to enjoy the works of this painter who studied under YAMADA Shinzan and ITO Shinsui, and was influenced by Paul Gauguin.
GUSHIKEN Seiji (real name: Koga) was born in 1908 in Hantagawa, Mawashi Village, as the fourth son of father Koken and mother Mantz.
In 1927, GUSHIKEN Seiji moved to Tokyo, and in 1929, he become an apprentice of the Japanese-style painter and sculptor YAMADA Shinzan, and changed his alias to “Koga”. Later, in 1940, he studied under the Japanese-style painter ITO Shinsui, and in 1963, he changed his alias to “Seiji”.
Okinawa’s distinctive culture has developed in a climate and history different from that of mainland Japan. How have the changing times impacted Okinawan artists and their work?
“The History of Okinawa’s Fine Arts” has been divided into the following sections in an effort to provide visitors a sense of these changes over time: pre-war, post-war, return to mainland Japan, post-reversion to Japan, contemporary art, and sculpture.
We invite you to visit this exhibition and see how Okinawan artists have expressed the sentiments of their times.
