Reversion to the motherland, reversion to the mainland, reversion to Japan, reversion of Okinawa ... There are many ways to describe the reversion of Okinawa to Japan in 1972, but most Okinawan people call it "Fukki" (the reversion). The single word Fukki, which is ambiguous in meaning, gives no direction but seems to reflect the complicated feelings toward the history of Okinawa.
"Qualia" in Latin means a feelings based on subjective experiences, such as feeling red when seeing a red apple. Today, 50 years after the reversion, 60 % of the people living in Okinawa were not yet born before the reversion. This exhibition introduces works and movements of artists that focus on society before the period of Reversion under the U.S. rule, and the period after the reversion. Whether you are familiar with the reversion or not, you may experience FUKKI QUALIA through their artworks.
* The exhibition will take place in two installments: Part Ⅰ will exhibition the works before the reversion, and Part Ⅱ will exhibit the period after the reversion.
