What’s Maywa Denki?
デンキ屋さん？いえいえ、アーティストです！
The denki in Maywa Denki means “electricity” in Japanese ... So is Maywa Denki an electronics store? No, it’s actually neither of those things!
明和電機は1993年に結成された、土佐信道氏による芸術ユニットです。結成から30年、数々の「ナンセンス（超常識）マシーン」をこの世に爆誕させてきました。特に音符形の愛らしい電子楽器「オタマトーン」は世界中から注目を浴び、見るものを驚きと笑いの渦に巻き込んでいます。
Maywa Denki is an artistic unit that was formed in 1993 by Novmichi Tosa. Over the course of its 30+ years, Maywa Denki has brought many “nonsense (super common sense) machines” into the world. Maywa Denki’s Otamatone in particular continues to fascinate people across the globe and remains one of its most popular inventions. This adorable, eighth note-shaped electronic musical instrument has become a worldwide phenomenon and it continues to amaze and bring joy and laughter to many.

本展覧会では明和電機のこれまでの軌跡をたどり、土佐氏の独創的な「発想」とアイディアを現実に生み出す力のヒミツを貴重な資料とともに惜しみなくご紹介します。社長自らが作品について語る「製品説明会」という名のギャラリートークやライブなどイベントも必見です。
“Super common sense”: What the world seeks now more than ever!
This exhibition traces Maywa Denki’s history while also giving us a generous introduction to many valuable Maywa Denki products and materials. Visitors will also have the unique opportunity to learn some of the secrets behind the creative ideation process of Maywa Denki’s President, Mr. Tosa —and gain more insight into how Maywa Denki turns ideas into reality. Also, be sure not to miss Mr.Tosa's “Product Briefing” public gallery talk and other live performances!
